ACV and Gelatin for 'Thyroid Hair' Sufferer

Just over 6 years ago, I suddenly became ill with Graves Disease (overactive thyroid), which developed into Thyrotoxicosis (life-threatening). Prior to that, I had hip length hair that people couldn't resist touching. Soft, thick and straight.

It quickly reacted to the illness and the radioactive iodine treatment that a specialist told me I had to have, or I would "drop dead at any minute". The treatment exacerbated my thyroid condition, and caused a whole world of hurt to most of the rest of my body, particularly my hair and skin.

Friends said I looked as though I'd aged 20 years, overnight. My hair began to fall out at a rapid rate and even sounded 'crunchy' when my head moved on the pillow in bed at night.

I know the medical world hates 'anecdotal' evidence of natural cures, remedies and things that help, but I think that's because their mindset is that if most of the world's consumers begin turning their attention to natural remedies first, it will threaten their multi-billion dollar chemical, drug and cosmetic industries.

My attitude is: too bad, so sad. If they can't beat us, they ought to consider paying attention to what we have to say, honestly investigate our claims and work with us, instead of against us. There's room for both in this world, in my opinion.

In any event, nothing worked. I felt depressed and desperate. Then I remembered something I'd forgotten: unflavored gelatin and Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV).

I knew gelatin was important for protein so I mixed a couple teaspoons of gelatin in a jug with half a cup of cold water and stirred, then added half a cup of boiling water to help it dissolve, plus 2 tsps of ACV to prevent it from setting, and a few drops of lavender essential oil and patchouli essential oil (not necessary, but I threw them in anyway).

I put this mix through my hair, saturated it, then massaged it in and left it there for 15 mins. Then I lightly washed it out with any old commercial shampoo I had on hand.

Next, I mixed 2 tablespoons of ACV in a cup of cool water, together with 1/4 tsp of vegetable glycerin and a few drops of essential oils (again, the essential oils weren't necessary, I just wanted to add them). I poured this mix into my hair, massaged it into roots and ends, then left it in. I did not rinse it out.

Because I was in a hurry, I blow dried my hair. It was soft, but fluffy and very static-y. So I pulled out my hair straightener and whipped it through my hair without using heat sealing products. (I can almost hear your horror).

The result? My hair was so shiny, so vibrant, so 'alive' and most of all, it was buttery soft! I couldn't believe it. Friends even asked if I'd just colored my hair because it was so shiny.

I will never go back to hair conditioners again. I've also begun using the gelatin mix for a face mask and after I rinse it off, I finish by spritzing my face with the ACV mix.

My skin is quickly being restored to its' normal, soft, healthy glow. I'm so happy!
